چکیده

The aim of the work described in this paper was to establish the effect of physical parameters such as pH and temperature on the microbial growth and iron oxidation rate of an isolated iron oxidizing bacterial strain from mine effluent. The bacterial lag phase was reduced to zero by repeated subculturing in fresh nutrient media. The rate of iron oxidation was considered as the growth rate of the microorganism in its logarithmic phase. Variation of pH showed an inadequate effect within the range from 1.5 to 2.5 ensuing growth flexibility in acidic medium. With variation of temperature from 293 to 313K, the rate increased up to 303K and gradually decreased beyond this temperature. At the optimized values of pH 2.0 and temperature 303K, the iron oxidation rate was 2:17 10 4 kg m 3 s . [doi:10.2320/matertrans.MER2008051]

Use of an intelligent control system To evaluate multiparametric effects on iron oxidation by thermophilic bacteria

A learning-based intelligent control system, the BioExpert, was developed and applied to the evaluation of multiparametric effects on iron oxidation by enrichment cultures of moderately thermophilic, acidophilic mining bacteria. The control system acquired and analyzed the data and then selected and maintained the sets of conditions that were evaluated. Through multiple iterations, the BioExper...

Immobilization of Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans on Monolithic Packing for Biooxidation of Ferrous Iron

The oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+) in solution using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans has industrial applications exclusively in the regeneration of ferric iron (Fe3+) as an oxidizing agent for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from waste gases, desulfurization of coal, leaching of non-ferrous metallic sulfides and treatment of acid mine drainage. The aim of this investigation was to increase the...

Microbial oxidation of refractory gold sulfide concentrate by a native consortium

A defined mesophilic consortium including an iron oxidizing bacterium and a sulfur oxidizing bacterium was constructed to evaluate its ability for bioleaching a flotation concentrate from Andacollo mine in Neuquén, Argentina. Experiments were performed in shake flasks with a pulp density of 10% (w/v), using a basal salt medium containing ferrous iron at pH 1.8. The leaching solutions were analy...

Optimization of reaction conditions and effect of catalyst type on product distribution in Cyclooctene oxidation

Oxidation of cyclooctene was studied in presence aqueous hydrogen peroxide (30%, v/v) over nano iron oxide. The catalyst prepared by microemulsion method and characterized using various techniques including XRD, TEM and BET techniques for evaluating phase, structure and morphology and surface area. In this study, we investigated the effects of varying the catalyst content, reaction temperature,...

Leaching of pyrite by acidophilic heterotrophic iron-oxidizing bacteria in pure and mixed cultures.

Seven strains of heterotrophic iron-oxidizing acidophilic bacteria were examined to determine their abilities to promote oxidative dissolution of pyrite (FeS2) when they were grown in pure cultures and in mixed cultures with sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus spp. Only one of the isolates (strain T-24) oxidized pyrite when it was grown in pyrite-basal salts medium. However, when pyrite-containing cu...
